Peter Joseph WWII Museum
History buffs should consider this excellent private ‘museum’ of WWII relics. Run by knowledgeable Alphy Barney Paulson, it features lots of utensils, ammunition, machine guns, shells, crockery, helmets, shavers and knives, all left behind by the Japanese and Americans. It's behind the soccer field, a 20- to 30-minute walk from the market, to the east.
The Battle of Munda Point was a battle, from 22 July-4 August 1943, between primarily United States Army and Imperial Japanese Army forces during the New Georgia Campaign in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific War. In the battle, U.S. forces captured a Japanese airfield constructed at Munda Point on New Georgia. After losing the battle for the airfield, Japanese forces abandoned New Georgia entirely and redeployed to defend nearby Kolombangara. The U.S. employed the airfield in its campaign as part of Operation Cartwheel to isolate the major Japanese base at Rabaul, New Britain.
There are American, British and Japanese ones and they make a cool, but slightly surreal, display.
Peter Joseph WWII Museum -Munda, Solomon Islands stacked at the door of the deep green building are large shell casings and on the wall is a small signs telling you this is the Peter Joseph Museum.
It is named after a United States serviceman whose dog-tags, that is discs identifying the person, the owner of the museum Barney Paulsen found one day while searching for World War II relics.
The museum is roughly double-garage sized, but it has a nassive number of artifacts to look at.There is an array of Japanese machinegun barrels, including almost full versions of a Type 99 light mchinegun and a heavy machinegun. There are bullets, knuckdusters, bombs, a barrel of a mountain gun, bayonets, water canteens and glass bottles. Almost all of the artifacts are rusting and have seen better days but this adds to the feel of the museum as these items have been either dug out of the ground or left on the battlefields for almost seven decades.
